Zormiwasa
Meaning “Come play music” in the language of the Hausa people of West Africa, ‘Zormiwasa’ is the name Elliott has given his student performance ensembles since he returned from Africa in 1997.
Over the last 3 decades Zormiwasa has come to be so much more than the name of a performance ensemble.
Zormiwasa has become family.
The Zormies, as we are affectionately known, are an ever expanding eclectic group of wonderful humans who hail from all over the world and all walks of life. The one common thread in the tapestry of this sub-community is a deep love for rhythm.
Long-term friendships, bands, even marriages and the odd baby can call Zormiwasa ‘home’. For most of us, going to drum class is not just about having a good old spank of the hide but a chance to connect to check in, have a laugh over a cup of tea and find out what’s happening on the weekend, what’s ‘the drum’, so to speak.
In addition to these amazing community vibes, as a Zormie, you also receive free access to fantastic learning tools:
- Upon course registration, inclusion to the Zormiwasa private Facebook group, within which you can access a vast library of approximately 30 albums full of instructional videos covering each of the rhythms that Elliott has taught over the last 6 years or so.
- The Zormiwasa Beats & Bars Rhythm Booklet. Presented upon completion of the course this booklet contains pulse notation transcriptions of the rhythms taught in each course you attend, plus gig posters, photos of your Zormiwasa performance groups and the backstory of how Zormiwasa cane to be.
