![]() | Next Dates: TBC Minjerribah is a week end retreat lead by Elliott Orr, Nathan Tight and Josie Kurukulie on the beautiful Stradbroke Island. Our approach is organic (with a bit of luxury), our hearts open & our intention is share our skills, knowledge and insights into these exciting art forms! This retreat offers a holistic experience in body, mind and spirit through the power of drumming, dancing and yoga! Minjerribah is a short ferry trip from Cleveland. The people and the vibe is easy going and relaxed. Everyone stays at the Domain Resort and classes are held in the Point Lookout community Hall, located right next to the site of the Island Vibe Festival a 2 mins walk from the resort. The beach is a hop, skip and a splash away! We create a community kitchen for the retreat. There is much value on sharing in the preperation and eating of food. Your culinary skills and enthusiasm will be greatly appreciated and celebrated! | |

Our approach is organic, our hearts open & our intention is share our skills, knowledge & passion in a relaxed yet intensive manner. We wish to create a village for 7 days, at the heart of which is drumming, marimba, dance, spirit & joy!!! We invite & encourage you to play and learn this new ancient music!!!! CHRIS BERRY: Chris brings with him a new ancient music full of power grace & downright funky grooves, moves & melodies!!!! Chris Berry is a weaver of worlds. Growing up in America, living in Africa for over a decade, traveling the globe and now residing in Hawaii. He has spent his life immersed in African music, culture & dance. Elders have named him a master musician & he has been honored with the title of gwenyambira (“one whose music calls the spirits”), a distinction reserved only for those who have achieved the highest fusion of the technical and the magical in Shona music. Chris has also been initiated into the Sangoma (healers) of South Africa - a highly demanding initiation process challenging him on all levels.THE SUPPORT TEACHERS Elliott Orr In 19 years of performing, teaching & making African drums Elliott has developed a healthy reputation. Training in West Africa instilled a deep understanding of the cultural context of African drumming, allowing him to bring the vibrant energy of this culture to the Australian community in his own fun-loving & exuberant teaching style. At the Banakuma camp Elliott’s role will be to play for the dance classes & assist Chris in helping you learn the rhythms.Fatima Miller Fatima, or ‘Fati’ as she is affectionately known, has been performing, teaching and producing music for over 12 years. She has toured both nationally & internationally. Her time spent soaking up the musical heritage while studying in Africa shines through. Fatima is now working with a number of groups including much loved marimba ensemble Jambezi. Fatima will be supporting the marimba classes at Camp Bana-kuma.Josie Kurukulie As founder of ‘Dance Roots’ Josie is dedicated to bringing joy through dance. In both performing & teaching Josie is thoroughly engaging, embodying the very spirit of African dance. Backed by a strong understanding of the interconnectedness between drummer & dancer Josie will help to facilitate the learning of the Bana-kuma dance workshops.
